Kia electric SUV rollout and global EV expansion
Overview
Kia's global electric vehicle expansion continues through diverse model rollouts and manufacturing investments. In Mexico, Kia has commenced production of the EV3 compact electric SUV at its Pesquería plant, marking the company’s first assembly of 100% electric vehicles in the country. This follows a $649 million investment aimed at expanding facility capacity through 2028. In North America, the 2027 EV3 is being positioned as an affordable entry point. In the U.S., the vehicle starts at $31,385 including freight, with the Wind FWD trim offering a 321-mile range. In Canada, the EV3 remains the country’s least expensive EV, starting at $39,744. Kia is further expanding its North American lineup with the 2027 EV4 GT in Canada, a high-performance model featuring an 81.4 kWh battery, 288 horsepower, and an estimated range of 431 kilometers, priced at $58,595.
European operations show significant growth in both passenger and commercial segments. The PV5 electric van has captured a 37 percent market share in Europe’s electric C-segment, leading sales in 12 countries during the first half of 2026. Kia is also expanding its GT performance lineup to include the EV3, EV4, and EV5 models. These models utilize an 81.4 kWh battery based on Hyundai’s E-GMP architecture. The EV3 GT and EV4 GT both deliver 292 hp, while the EV5 GT produces between 302 and 306 hp. To enhance responsiveness, the GT versions feature stiffer springs, tighter suspension tuning, and a dedicated ‘GT Mode’. Pablo Martinez Masip, Vice President of Product Marketing and Customer Service at Kia Europe, stated these models aim to make electric driving ‘more responsive and emotionally engaging while maintaining daily usability’.
In Romania, the Kia EV2 was named the ‘Best Electric City Car 2026’ in the mini category (vehicles under four meters) following urban testing and charging evaluations.
