Kia launches universal‑design PV5 WAV taxis in Seoul

Kia Motor Company is partnering with Seoul to operate a pilot program of twelve PV5 WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) taxis. The trial runs from July 1 to December 31, 2024 and introduces a universal‑design electric taxi that can carry both wheelchair users and regular passengers in the same vehicle.

The PV5 WAV features a low‑floor design, side‑entry ramp, wheelchair‑locking device and a third‑row seat for a caregiver. Priority dispatch is given to severely mobility‑impaired riders, while other passengers pay the standard mid‑size‑taxi fare. Data on usage and customer satisfaction collected during the six‑month trial will determine whether the model is expanded to other districts or cities.

Kia plans to use the Seoul pilot as a template for collaborations with additional local governments, aiming to improve mobility for disabled and elderly citizens and to increase operational efficiency for taxi operators.
