Kid Cudi to write, direct, and star in Basquiat biopic 'JEAN

Rapper and actor Kid Cudi, born Scott Mescudi, has announced he will write, direct, and star in a biographical film titled ‘JEAN’ about the influential neo-expressionist artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The announcement, made via Instagram, includes a first look at wardrobe tests featuring Cudi in attire and hairstyles designed to mimic the iconic artist.

Cudi stated that after years of being encouraged to play the role without a project ever materializing, he decided to develop the film himself. He described the project as “a love letter to Jean, the 80s and NY city,” noting that Basquiat has been a significant inspiration throughout his career. The production is slated to begin filming in 2027.

In conjunction with the film announcement, Cudi also reached out to transgender actors on social media, expressing interest in casting them for the project. This comes as several industry figures have recently highlighted the challenges of securing acting work in Hollywood.
