Kid Cudi Jean-Michel Basquiat biopic project

Overview

Rapper and actor Kid Cudi has announced he will write, direct, and star in a biographical film titled ‘JEAN’ about the neo-expressionist artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Cudi described the project as “a love letter to Jean, the 80s and NY city,” noting that Basquiat has been a significant inspiration throughout his career. Filming is expected to begin in 2027.

In addition to his creative roles, Cudi has expressed interest in casting transgender actors for the production. The announcement follows an estate-approved documentary about Basquiat scheduled for release on Netflix in December, and observers have noted the project's relationship to the legacy of the 1996 film ‘Basquiat’ directed by Julian Schnabel.
