Imo State police locate NYSC members' hideout amid IED threat

Security agencies have located the suspected hideout of kidnappers holding approximately 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Imo State. The victims were abducted on October 1 while traveling in two buses from Ibadan toward orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states. The attack occurred along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in the Umunoha area.

Imo State Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso reported that while drones successfully pinpointed the camp's coordinates, an immediate rescue operation has been delayed due to intelligence suggesting the site is mined with improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Security forces are preparing to deploy heavy equipment, including bulldozers and armored personnel carriers, to conduct a safe extraction.

Families of the victims report that the captives are being subjected to physical abuse and beatings to pressure parents into paying ransom. While initial demands were reported at ₦50 million per victim (totaling ₦1 billion), kidnappers have reportedly lowered the demand to ₦5 million per person. The Inspector-General of Police has deployed a Deputy Inspector-General of Police and additional commissioners to coordinate the search-and-rescue efforts.
