Kim McGuinness unveils North East rail vision for 2040

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness has unveiled the ‘North East Rail Vision’, a long-term strategic roadmap aiming to transform regional connectivity by 2040. The proposal seeks greater local control over rail services, infrastructure, and fares to ensure decisions are made closer to the communities they serve.

Key components of the plan include integrating local rail into the Angel Network alongside bus and Metro services to provide simpler, integrated ticketing. The vision also proposes extending the Metro to Washington with three new stations, progressing the Leamside Line to increase capacity on the East Coast Main Line, and extending the Northumberland Line to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.

Other objectives involve introducing modern electric and battery-powered trains, increasing service frequency to every 30 minutes, and improving station facilities in Sunderland, Newcastle Central, and Metrocentre. The plan aims to enhance safety, accessibility, and reliability through new signalling systems and more flexible service hours.
