North East regional public transport developments

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness has introduced several initiatives to expand and modernize regional public transport. In August 2026, the Mayor announced expansions to accessibility, stating that starting in April 2027, passengers with disabled bus passes and Gold Cards will be eligible for free travel at all times on the Tyne and Wear Metro and the Shields Ferry. This removes previous requirements for disabled passengers to provide proof of employment or education for all-day travel. The announcement also confirmed the continuation of the Care Experienced Scheme, providing unlimited travel via free Pop smart cards for eligible 18 to 25-year-olds who have left local authority care.

By September 2026, the focus shifted toward long-term infrastructure through the ‘North East Rail Vision’. This strategic roadmap for 2040 aims to increase local control over rail services, infrastructure, and fares. The plan includes integrating local rail into the Angel Network for simpler ticketing, extending the Metro to Washington, progressing the Leamside Line, and extending the Northumberland Line to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. Additional goals involve introducing electric and battery-powered trains, increasing service frequency to every 30 minutes, and upgrading station facilities in Sunderland, Newcastle Central, and Metrocentre.
