Kimbo Espresso Napoletano tops Altroconsumo moka coffee ranking
Altroconsumo has released a new ranking of 15 ground coffee products commonly sold in Italian supermarkets for use in moka pots. The evaluation combined laboratory analysis—measuring moisture, ash content, aqueous extract, and contaminants like ochratoxin A and acrylamide—with blind taste tests conducted by 60 consumers.
Kimbo Espresso Napoletano secured first place with 74 points, earning an ‘excellent’ quality rating. It was closely followed by Caffè Vergnano 1882 Granaroma Miscela Classica with 73 points. Three products tied for third place with 72 points: Illy Tostato Classico, Carrefour Classico Miscela Tradizionale, and Coop Caffè Classico.
The study noted that high-quality coffee does not necessarily require a high price point, as several supermarket private-label brands performed well. Conversely, Pellini N. 42 Tradizionale received a lower score of 61 points, while Segafredo Crema Ricca ranked at the bottom of the tested group with 55 points.
