Altroconsumo moka coffee quality testing
Overview
Altroconsumo conducted an evaluation of 15 ground coffee products sold in Italian supermarkets for use in moka pots. The assessment utilized laboratory analysis—measuring moisture, ash content, aqueous extract, and contaminants such as acrylamide and ochratoxin A—alongside blind taste tests.
Initial results identified Kimbo Espresso Napoletano as the top-rated product with 74 points, earning an ‘excellent’ rating. Other high-performing brands included Caffè Vergnano 1882 Granaroma Miscela Classica, Illy Tostato Classico, Carrefour Classico Miscela Tradizionale, and Coop Caffè Classico. Conversely, Segafredo Crema Ricca received the lowest score in the group.
The findings suggest that higher price points do not guarantee superior quality, as several budget-friendly and private-label brands, such as Gimoka Aroma Classico and Esselunga Macinato per moka Classico, performed well relative to their cost.
