Kimi Antonelli to face grid penalty at Monza Grand Prix

Mercedes championship leader Kimi Antonelli will face a significant grid penalty at the upcoming Italian Grand Prix in Monza due to a planned full power unit replacement. Team Principal Toto Wolff confirmed the decision, noting that Monza’s circuit characteristics—specifically its long straights and overtaking opportunities—make it the most logical venue to absorb the setback while pursuing the world title.

The penalty, which could result in a drop of up to 30 places depending on the number of components replaced, comes at a sensitive time as Antonelli competes in his home race. Despite the disadvantage, Antonelli remains confident that he can recover positions. Mercedes is also evaluating when to apply a similar penalty for George Russell.

Beyond the track, the Monza Grand Prix is expected to have a massive economic impact on the Lombardy region, with estimates suggesting a total value of at least 343 million euros. This includes direct revenue for hospitality and tourism, as well as international media visibility. The event is anticipated to draw over 380,000 spectators throughout the weekend.
