Kimi Antonelli to start from back of grid at Monza GP

Mercedes has confirmed that Formula 1 championship leader Kimi Antonelli will start from the back of the grid at the upcoming Italian Grand Prix in Monza. The decision follows the team's choice to install a complete new power unit, which exceeds the seasonal quota for components.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff stated that the decision was based on technical calculations rather than sentiment, noting, “Our algorithms do not take nationality into consideration. But we are here to fight for a championship.” Wolff emphasized that Monza is theoretically the best track to absorb such a penalty due to its high-speed characteristics and overtaking opportunities.

Antonelli, who currently holds a 59-point lead in the standings, has already reached the limit for his V6 engine and exhaust system. His teammate, George Russell, is also facing potential grid penalties later in the season due to reliability issues, though the team has not yet finalized when his power unit components will be replaced.
