The incident occurred on August 9 while he was vacationing with his family. An autopsy conducted in Piraeus confirmed electrocution as the cause of death. His mother also reportedly experienced an electric shock while attempting to assist him.

Greek authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the property's electrical installation, which dates back to before the 1970s. Investigators are focusing on whether the system lacked a residual current device (RCD) and examining a potential malfunction in the water heater. The property has been sealed as a crime scene.

Questions have arisen regarding the involvement of Kimolos Mayor Konstantinos Vendouris, an electrician by profession, who reportedly signed an electrical installation certificate for the property in 2024. The family's lawyer, Stelios Voudouris, has indicated they are pursuing legal action and suggests the mayor may face criminal responsibility.

McKee was a highly regarded student at Terence MacSwiney Community College, known for developing ‘Bumblebee,’ a communication system for children with non-verbal autism, which received national recognition in Ireland.
