King Charles III issues condolences after devastating Colombia earthquake
King Charles III and Queen Camilla have issued a joint statement expressing they are “dreadfully saddened” by the devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia. In a message signed “Charles R”, the monarch offered his “deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences” to the Colombian people, specifically noting his thoughts for the bereaved, the injured, and emergency responders.
The earthquake, which had its epicenter in the village of San José del Palmar, was felt in Manizales, Cali, Pereira, and neighboring Ecuador and Panama. Reports indicate the disaster has caused significant loss of life and widespread destruction, with death tolls reported between 181 and over 250 people. Thousands have been injured, and thousands more remain missing as search efforts continue. The quake has also caused extensive damage to residential properties and infrastructure across western Colombia.
