Colombia earthquake and international response

Overview

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, with its epicenter located in the village of San José del Palmar. The seismic event was felt in several Colombian cities, including Manizales, Cali, and Pereira, as well as in neighboring Ecuador and Panama.

Initial reports indicated a death toll between 181 and 250 people with widespread destruction to infrastructure and residential properties. As the situation progressed, the reported death toll rose to over 265, with approximately 3,500 injuries and 164 Spanish nationals reported missing.

International leaders have offered condolences. King Charles III and Queen Camilla expressed they were “dreadfully saddened” by the disaster. Additionally, Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella thanked King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain for their solidarity following the event.
