Brazilian cinema highlights Oscar contenders and festival winners
The Brazilian film industry is experiencing significant activity across various festivals and award cycles. The Academia Brasileira de Cinema has announced 15 films eligible to represent Brazil for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Oscars. The selection process will narrow the list to six finalists on September 9, with the final representative announced on September 16. In the short film circuit, the 37th Kinoforum International Short Film Festival in São Paulo recently announced its winners. ‘Imagem Imaginada’ by Diego Benevides received the new Zita Carvalhosa Prize, while ‘Diálogo Bulbul’ won the Revelation Prize. The festival showcased works from over 50 countries.
Additionally, the Festival do Rio has selected 101 Brazilian productions for its Première Brasil showcase, featuring a mix of fiction and documentaries. Meanwhile, the São Paulo International Film Festival is preparing for its 50th anniversary, with American director James Gray set to open the event with his film ‘Paper Tiger’.
