Kinshasa relaunches urban train service to combat traffic

Kinshasa is attempting to address severe traffic congestion through the relaunch of its urban train service. After a nearly 15-year hiatus, rail traffic resumed in early September 2026, connecting the Central Station to the Masina sector, with planned extensions toward N’djili International Airport.

The Office National des Transports operates the service, which aims to alleviate the chronic gridlock that paralyzes the capital. This infrastructure development is viewed as a strategic move to improve mobility, which is essential for commerce and access to services in one of Central Africa’s largest urban hubs.

In response to the ongoing difficulties with road congestion, Kinshasa’s Provincial Minister of Transport and Urban Mobility, Jésus-Noël Sheke, has addressed the need for urgent measures. Discussions regarding urban mobility focus on public transport management, traffic organization, and adherence to road codes to provide sustainable solutions for the city's residents.
