Kinshasa urban train service relaunch
Overview
In early September 2026, Kinshasa relaunched its urban train service after a fifteen-year hiatus. Operated by the Office National des Transports (ONATRA), the service connects the Central Station to the Masina sector as part of efforts to alleviate severe traffic congestion in the capital. Future plans include extending the line toward N’djili International Airport.
Shortly after the resumption of service, a derailment occurred in the Masina district in the Pelende neighborhood. The locomotive moved approximately one meter off the tracks, though no injuries or deaths were reported. ONATRA attributed the incident to tracks being obstructed by sand and refuse, citing illegal sand dumping and waste disposal by residents as contributing factors to the poor infrastructure condition.
