Kipchumba Murkomen orders increased security for journalists

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to ensure journalists receive adequate security, particularly during political events, as the country approaches the 2027 General Elections.

Speaking in Elgeyo Marakwet, Murkomen emphasized that journalists must be able to perform their duties without fear of intimidation or violence. He noted that while the press may publish unfavorable or inaccurate reports about public figures, including himself, there are legal channels to address grievances rather than using violence to silence the media.

The directive follows the recent abduction of a Standard Group associate editor by armed men along the Gilgil-Nakuru Highway, who was later found near Masinga Dam. Murkomen condemned the abduction and stated that investigations would be conducted to ensure those responsible face legal consequences.
