Journalist abduction and media security in Kenya

Overview

On September 1, 2026, Alex Kiprotich, an associate editor at Standard Group, was abducted by armed men on the Gilgil-Nakuru highway in Kenya. He was located safe near Masinga Dam approximately nine hours later. Standard Group CEO Chaacha Mwita described the event as a “targeted attack intended to intimidate the media organization,” noting it was the second attempt on Kiprotich’s life in two months.

Allegations surfaced regarding the motive for the abduction, with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua suggesting it related to an investigative report on corruption in Mau Forest compensation funds. The Kenya Editors Guild condemned the incident as an “assault on press freedom.”

In response to the abduction, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen directed the Inspector General of Police to ensure journalists receive adequate security, especially during political events leading up to the 2027 General Elections. Murkomen condemned the act and stated that legal channels should be used to address grievances rather than violence.
