Kishtwar nurse arrested in tribal girl rape and death case

A nurse at the Kishtwar district hospital in Jammu and Kashmir has been arrested in connection with the death of a 15-year-old tribal girl. The arrest brings the total number of individuals detained in the case to six.

According to police, the minor had been repeatedly sexually assaulted by a school teacher over several months, resulting in a pregnancy. The girl died on August 20 following a stillbirth after an alleged attempt to terminate the pregnancy. Investigators found that the teacher and his brother allegedly conspired to administer medication to end the pregnancy.

In addition to the teacher and his brother, a sanitation worker at the district hospital has been removed from service and held in connection with the case. The nurse, identified as Sonika, was apprehended following an investigation by a special investigation team (SIT) that uncovered her alleged role in the pregnancy termination.

Authorities have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under the POCSO Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The SIT is continuing its investigation to determine the involvement of all connected parties.
