Kishtwar minor death and sexual assault investigation

Overview

Following the death of a 15-year-old tribal student during medical transit from Kishtwar to Jammu, authorities in the Chatroo area of Jammu and Kashmir have expanded their investigation into allegations of sexual assault and pregnancy termination.

Initial reports led to the arrest of a government school teacher, Khalid Hussain, and his brother, Tariq Hussain. Investigators allege that Hussain repeatedly sexually assaulted the minor, resulting in a pregnancy that others allegedly attempted to terminate through the administration of medication. The student died on August 20 following a stillbirth.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Additional SP Pardeep Singh, has increased the number of detainees. Following the initial arrests, three more individuals—including a daily-wager working as a hospital sweeper, Mohd Ishaq, and Riyaz Ahmed Sheikh—were taken into custody. Most recently, a nurse identified as Sonika was arrested for her alleged role in the pregnancy termination. The sanitation worker has also been removed from service.

As of August 26, the total number of individuals held in connection with the case has reached six. The SIT continues to conduct a “scientific, evidence-based investigation” into the circumstances of the minor’s death and the involvement of those connected to her medical treatment. Legal proceedings are being conducted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
