Kitamaat Village hunter airlifted following remote mountain injury
An injured hunter was airlifted from a remote mountainous area approximately 16 km from Kitamaat Village on August 15. The rescue operation was initiated after the hunting group activated an SOS alert using an inReach satellite communication device, which allowed for contact in an area lacking conventional cellular service.
Eight members of Kitimat Ground Search and Rescue (KGSAR) responded to the emergency, supported by Canadian Helicopters, which transported two rescuers to the site. Other responding agencies included the Kitimat RCMP, BC Ambulance Service, and the Kitimat Fire Department. Due to the temporary closure of the emergency department at Kitimat General Hospital, the patient was flown to Terrace for medical treatment. KGSAR emphasized the importance of satellite communication devices and urged backcountry users to carry suitable equipment and share their travel plans.
