Kitchen hygiene: Essential tips to prevent bacterial buildup

Maintaining kitchen hygiene is essential to prevent the buildup of bacteria and food residues in common household items. Sponges are particularly high-risk due to their porous structure, which traps moisture, fats, and food particles. Simply rinsing a sponge is often insufficient; it is recommended to replace them frequently and ensure they are thoroughly dried after use to minimize the risk of cross-contamination.

Cutting boards also require careful maintenance. Over time, knife scratches can harbor microscopic food particles that are difficult to remove through standard washing. To prevent the spread of microorganisms, it is advised to use separate boards for raw meats, fish, and vegetables.

Other common areas for bacterial growth include kitchen towels, which collect moisture and germs from hands and surfaces throughout the day, and frequently touched objects like door handles and light switches. Using dedicated towels for different tasks and replacing them regularly can help maintain a cleaner environment.
