Recent research has quantified these contamination risks. A study from the University of Mauritius found that nearly half of the kitchen towels analyzed were positive for harmful bacterial growth. In the United States, findings revealed that 89 percent of tested towels were contaminated with coliform bacteria, with over 25 percent containing Escherichia coli. Martin Bucknavage, a food safety expert from Penn State University, warned that bacteria populations can double every twenty minutes under ideal conditions. Expanding on these hygiene concerns, experts have identified other common household items that harbor high bacterial levels. Research from Duke University indicates that the porous structure of cellulose foam makes dishwashing sponges a primary offender. Further research from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has identified additional sites for cross-contamination. USDA findings indicate that sinks, cutting boards, and spice containers are frequent sites for bacterial spread. Specifically, using the same cutting board for raw meat and vegetables can transfer bacteria, prompting recommendations to use separate boards for proteins and ready-to-eat foods. Additionally, a study of 200 people found that 12 percent unknowingly contaminated spice packaging while handling raw meat.
