Kitchen hygiene experts warn of high bacteria levels in sinks
Kitchen hygiene experts are warning that routine dishwashing may not be sufficient to prevent cross-contamination and foodborne illnesses. Environmental hygiene expert Lisa Ackerley notes that kitchens are often the areas in a home where bacteria accumulate most significantly. Research indicates that bacteria levels in kitchen sinks can be up to 100,000 times higher than those found in bathroom sinks.
To mitigate risks from pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria, experts recommend several hygiene practices. One key suggestion is to sanitize the sink with an antibacterial spray before washing dishes, particularly after handling raw meat, poultry, or unwashed vegetables. Additionally, special attention should be paid to cleaning cutting boards and knives used for raw proteins to prevent the spread of invisible bacteria to clean utensils and food ingredients.
