Kitchen hygiene tips to prevent bacterial cross-contamination

Improperly cleaned kitchen towels can become a source of bacterial spread, potentially transferring pathogens from raw foods to clean surfaces. To maintain kitchen hygiene and reduce the risk of cross-contamination, experts recommend three primary practices.

First, households should use separate towels for different purposes, such as drying hands, wiping countertops, and cleaning specific kitchen areas. This prevents contaminants from raw meat, fish, or poultry from spreading to surfaces used for cooked food.

Second, towels should be washed frequently using hot water cycles in a washing machine, especially when they become soiled with grease, food residue, or juices from raw ingredients.

Third, towels should be hung in a clean, well-ventilated area to dry quickly. Avoiding leaving damp towels bunched up on countertops or stacked on other moist cloths helps prevent bacterial growth.
