Kitimat council extends housing hearing and advances pay increase

In Kitimat, British Columbia, the municipal council has extended the public hearing for the proposed Riverbrook Estates development until October 5. The project, located at 167 Konigus Street, plans to include 287 homes, such as apartment buildings, townhouses, and a modular home park. Residents have expressed concerns regarding the scale of the density and the potential impact on traffic, emergency vehicle access, and pedestrian safety near Kildala Elementary School.

Separately, the Kitimat council has advanced a motion for a 2.9 per cent increase in remuneration for the mayor and councillors for 2027. If adopted, the mayor’s annual pay would rise to $53,750, and councillor pay would increase to $29,825. The adjustment is based on Consumer Price Index figures and is intended to be established before the next municipal election takes effect.
