Kitimat municipal council policy and development

The Kitimat municipal council has addressed several local policy matters, including childcare fees, housing development, and official remuneration.

Regarding childcare, the council decided to maintain current fee levels for summer extended-care services for children aged six to 12, rejecting proposals for broader subsidies. While some councillors argued that rising living costs necessitate additional support to remain a welcoming community, others noted that the existing Leisure Access Program already provides a 50 per cent subsidy for eligible low-income families and children in foster care.

In matters of urban development, the council extended the public hearing for the Riverbrook Estates project until October 5. The proposed development at 167 Konigus Street includes 287 units, such as apartments, townhouses, and a modular home park. Local residents have raised concerns regarding density, traffic, and pedestrian safety near Kildala Elementary School.

Additionally, the council advanced a motion to increase remuneration for the mayor and councillors by 2.9 per cent for 2027, an adjustment based on Consumer Price Index figures.
