Kizza Besigye treason trial resumes in Kampala

The treason trial of Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye has resumed in the High Court of Kampala. The proceedings have centered on the testimony of Andrew Wilson, a British-American security consultant known as ‘Orlando’. Wilson claims to have infiltrated Besigye’s circle, providing audio and video recordings that prosecutors allege are linked to plans for arms procurement and military training.

The defense has challenged the reliability of Wilson’s evidence, questioning his professional credentials and the methods used to obtain the recordings. Wilson, who describes himself as a self-taught expert in private security and intelligence, faces scrutiny regarding the legality and chain of custody of the evidence presented.

Parallel to the legal proceedings, reports indicate that negotiations are underway to secure Besigye’s release. These discussions are reportedly being led by Gen. Salim Saleh and involve various political leaders, religious figures, and organizations such as the Forum for Democratic Change and the Inter Party Organisation for Dialogue. No official terms or release dates have been confirmed.
