Uganda treason trial of Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale

The treason trial of Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale in the High Court of Uganda involves allegations of a plot to overthrow the government of Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The proceedings have seen significant shifts in legal representation; following the arrest of Erias Lukwago and the deportation of Kenyan Senior Counsel Martha Karua, Obeid Lutale appointed his daughter, Mariam Lutale, to join a new defense team from Baraka Legal Associated Advocates.

During the trial, the prosecution presented audio and video evidence recorded in several international locations, including Geneva, Nairobi, and Athens. A private security investigator, Andrew Wilson, testified regarding the use of covert recording devices and alleged efforts to train approximately 60 opposition members in paramilitary skills and the acquisition of weapons, including firearms and ricin.

In subsequent testimony, Wilson claimed that Kenyan Police planted evidence, specifically two pistols and fake currency, during a meeting in Nairobi. Wilson stated he lured the defendants to an apartment under the pretense of discussing a coup. Defense lawyers have challenged the handling of these weapons during cross-examination.
