Kizza Besigye treason trial: Witness claims Kenyan Police planted evidence

During the treason trial of Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale at the High Court in Kampala, a key prosecution witness, Andrew Wilson, testified that Kenyan Police planted evidence used in their arrest.

Wilson, a private investigator, told the court that the two pistols and fake currency notes involved in the case were set up by Kenyan Police in a meeting room at the Riverside apartments in Nairobi. He testified that the operation was intelligence-led and that he lured Besigye and Lutale into the apartment under the pretense of discussing a plot to overthrow the Ugandan government.

During cross-examination, Wilson admitted to unloading the bullets from the pistols upon entering the room for safety reasons. Defense lawyers challenged his actions, questioning why a professional investigator would handle weapons that did not belong to him. The trial, presided over by Judge Emmanuel Baguma, is scheduled to continue on September 17, 2026.
