Istanbul construction accidents result in death and injuries
Two separate construction-related incidents occurred in Istanbul, resulting in fatalities and injuries.
In the Büyükçekmece district, a landslide occurred at a residential construction site in the Alkent 2000 neighborhood. The collapse trapped two workers under tons of soil. Rescue teams managed to save one 28-year-old worker, who was hospitalized, but a 39-year-old worker could not be rescued and lost his life. Following the incident, the Istanbul Governor's Office announced that three individuals—the construction company owner, the site manager, and an employee—have been taken into custody as part of a judicial investigation into safety negligence.
In the Küçükçekmece district, a building undergoing demolition as part of an urban transformation project partially collapsed at the Şirin Sitesi. The sudden collapse caused dust and smoke to cover the area and injured three passersby. AFAD and fire department teams conducted extensive search and rescue operations using K9 units and acoustic listening devices. After confirming that no one remained under the rubble, the remaining part of the structure was demolished using heavy machinery. Authorities have taken the demolition firm's representative and the excavator operator in for questioning to investigate the cause of the collapse.
