Kleidi migrant facility: Escape attempt by 50 migrants in Serres
A group of approximately 50 migrants attempted to escape from a closed migrant facility in Kleidi, Serres, on the afternoon of September 25. The group reportedly tried to knock down the facility's perimeter fence, prompting police to intervene using chemical agents to control the situation.
The facility currently houses about 200 migrants, roughly half of whom are from Egypt and the other half from Bangladesh. While recent transfers to Pre-removal Centers for Foreigners (PROKEKA) have reduced the facility's population following incidents in August, tensions remain high.
Giannis Kounios, president of the Serres Police Officers Union, has called for the immediate closure of the facility and the transfer of its residents to more secure locations. The Panhellenic Federation of Police Officers (POSY) has also held protests regarding the site.
