Unrest at Kleidi migrant facility in Greece
Overview
A migrant hospitality facility in Kleidi, located in the Sintiki municipality of Serres, has experienced repeated unrest. On September 8, approximately 40 masked individuals rioted at the ‘Gamma’ wing, throwing stones at police and damaging perimeter fencing and two official vehicles. This incident followed three previous riots in August and early September, which had already destroyed three other wings of the facility.
By late September, the facility’s population had been reduced to approximately 200 migrants, primarily from Egypt and Bangladesh, following transfers to Pre-removal Centers for Foreigners (PROKEKA). Despite the reduced numbers, another incident occurred on September 25 when a group of about 50 migrants attempted to escape by trying to knock down the perimeter fence, leading police to use chemical agents to regain control.
In response to the recurring violence, local officials and police unions have demanded the facility’s closure. Giannis Kounios, president of the Serres Police Officers Union, has criticized the security situation, arguing that officers should not serve as “human shields” and calling for the immediate transfer of detainees to more secure locations.
