Klinik Oberwart expands cardiac and neurosurgical capacities
The state of Burgenland is pursuing a strategy to strengthen specialized medical care in its southern region, focusing on the expansion of capacities at Klinik Oberwart in heart and neurosurgery.
Governor Hans Peter Doskozil cited rising case numbers as justification for establishing a comprehensive heart center that integrates cardiology and cardiac surgery. Data from the clinic shows significant growth in complex procedures. Since the introduction of the TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) method approximately six months ago, 100 treatments have already been performed, with projections exceeding 140 procedures for 2026.
Other cardiac sectors are also seeing increases. Structural heart disease operations rose from 33 in 2025 to 76 at the time of reporting, with over 100 expected by the end of 2026. Electrophysiology treatments increased from 158 in the previous year to 256 by September 2026, with an estimated 340 by year-end. Overall, the number of cardiological interventions has more than doubled compared to the previous year.
