Oberwart Clinic medical authorization and expansion

The authorization for the heart surgery department at the Oberwart Clinic in Burgenland was overturned by the Burgenland State Administrative Court. The court ruled that the initial authorization process used criteria for medical necessity that contradicted legal standards and judicial precedents. Following the ruling, the matter was referred back to administrative authorities for a new decision.

Despite the legal setback, Burgenland Governor Hans Peter Doskozil stated that department operations would continue uninterrupted and scheduled surgeries remain valid. Doskozil announced that ‘Gesundheit Burgenland’ would file an extraordinary revision and request a stay of execution, arguing that the medical necessity of the facility is proven by its daily operations.

Parallel to the legal proceedings, the state of Burgenland is pursuing a strategy to expand specialized medical capacities at the clinic. This expansion focuses on strengthening heart and neurosurgery services in the southern region. Data from the clinic indicates a significant increase in complex procedures, including a rise in electrophysiology treatments and TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) methods, with the total number of cardiological interventions more than doubling compared to the previous year.
