Kluang LED billboards hacked to display explicit content
Public LED display screens managed by the Kluang Municipal Council (MPK) in Johor were recently hacked, resulting in the unauthorized broadcast of explicit videos and images. The incident, which occurred at several locations including Dataran Tasik Kluang and Taman Intan, caused significant public concern as footage circulated widely on social media.
In response, MPK confirmed a cyber intrusion and took immediate action by powering off all affected screens. The council is currently conducting an investigation in collaboration with system vendors to identify the cause, implement recovery measures, and strengthen system security.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching described the incident as a “wake-up call” for both government and private agencies to prioritize cybersecurity. While the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has not yet received a formal request for assistance from MPK, the agency has expressed readiness to provide technical expertise and advice. Teo emphasized the necessity of regular security audits and investments in cybersecurity to protect against high-risk digital threats.
