LED billboard hacking incidents in Malaysia

Overview

On October 29, 2026, eight public LED display screens managed by the Kluang Municipal Council (MPK) in Johor, Malaysia, were hacked. The intrusion resulted in the unauthorized broadcast of explicit videos and images at locations including Dataran Tasik Kluang and Taman Intan. In response, MPK powered off the affected screens and launched an investigation with system vendors and police.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching characterized the incident as a “wake-up call” regarding the need for cybersecurity prioritization and regular security audits.

A hacking collective known as ‘Leakers$’ later claimed responsibility for the attacks. The group stated they exploited a widespread software vulnerability used to transmit content to digital billboards, using automated scanning tools to identify exposed systems. The group claimed the vulnerability affects commercial systems in multiple countries, including Malaysia and Egypt.
