KM Virgo Transport 8 search operation extended by seven days
The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) has extended the search and rescue operation for the victims of the KM Virgo Transport 8 shipwreck for an additional seven days. The operation, which has been ongoing for 14 days, will undergo evaluations every three days to determine subsequent steps.
As of September 26, 2026, 172 people from the original manifest of 243 have been located. This includes 108 survivors and 64 deceased individuals. Currently, 71 people remain missing. Recent efforts have included diving operations near the wreckage in the Java Sea and recovering bodies found along the coast of Central Kalimantan, including Sukamara and Seruyan regencies.
The vessel capsized in the Masalembo archipelago at a depth of approximately 30 meters. Search teams have faced challenges including strong undercurrents, high waves, and thick smoke from forest fires, which hindered aerial evacuations. Basarnas is also planning to salvage the vessel to gain better access to the interior. Meanwhile, the investigation into the ship's captain and crew has been transferred to the National Police Headquarters, and DNA testing is underway to identify 22 remaining deceased victims.
