KM Virgo Transport 8 shipwreck: 117 people remain missing in Java Sea
Search and rescue operations continue for the KM Virgo Transport 8, which sank in the Java Sea near the Masalembo waters. The vessel was carrying 243 people, including 213 passengers and 30 crew members.
As of the 10th day of operations, Basarnas reports that 126 people have been located, with 108 survivors and 18 fatalities confirmed. A total of 117 individuals remain missing. To assist in the search, a joint team of 34 divers from the Indonesian Navy and Basarnas has been deployed to inspect the ship's hull for victims trapped inside.
Recent findings include three bodies recovered from within the sunken vessel and two victims found in the waters of Seruyan, Central Kalimantan. Experts from the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) have addressed speculation regarding the ship's age, clarifying that there are no specific regulatory limits on a vessel's operational age; instead, retirement is determined by economic viability, regulatory compliance, and maintenance records.
