KNDS Ammo Italy factory explosion in Colleferro FAST-MOVING

A powerful explosion and fire occurred on August 13, 2026, at the KNDS Ammo Italy facility (formerly Simmel Difesa) in Colleferro, southeast of Rome. The incident originated in the powder-pressing department, where explosives and propellants are processed. The blast was heard several kilometers away and caused significant alarm among local residents.

Emergency services, including firefighters, Carabinieri, and Civil Protection, responded to the scene to contain the flames and secure the area. Colleferro Mayor Giulio Calamita confirmed that the situation was brought under control and noted that the incident occurred during a summer holiday period when the plant was operating with a reduced workforce of approximately 20 to 24 employees. This reduced presence likely prevented a more severe tragedy.

No deaths or injuries have been officially reported. The Velletri prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the incident, with authorities examining whether the cause was a technical failure or potentially arson.
