KNDS munitions factory explosion in Colleferro

Overview

On August 13, 2026, a powerful explosion and fire occurred in the powder-pressing department of the KNDS Ammo Italy munitions factory in Colleferro, near Rome. The blast, which was audible several kilometers away, prompted the evacuation of approximately 24 employees. No injuries or deaths were reported. The Velletri prosecutor's office opened an investigation to determine if the cause was an industrial accident or arson.

By August 16, investigations revealed the fire originated in a department containing nitrogel, a stabilized form of nitroglycerin. The blast created a crater over 1.5 meters deep. The Velletri prosecutor's office has since opened a criminal investigation for negligent disaster.

Investigators are examining potential links to a recent explosion at the Emco munitions depot in Bulgaria, which supplies ammunition to Ukraine. While political figures, including Carlo Calenda, have raised concerns regarding a possible Russian hybrid attack or sabotage, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated there is currently no evidence of anything other than an internal issue.

Environmental monitoring by Arpa Lazio reported a spike in ozone levels following the blast, with monitoring stations recording values of 128 micrograms per cubic meter. While the Higher Institute of Health advised caution for vulnerable individuals, no municipal orders to close windows were issued. Local officials and environmental groups are calling for increased scrutiny of industrial safety standards in the Valle del Sacco region. Meanwhile, investigators from the Special Investigative Department (Ris) have begun using laser scanners to create 3D reconstructions of the site.
