Koblenz closes Main Cemetery at night for wild boar hunting

The city administration of Koblenz has implemented nighttime closures of the Koblenz Main Cemetery to manage a growing wild boar population. Due to repeated destruction of graves and green spaces, the 36-hectare site will be strictly closed to the public every night from 20:00 to 06:00 to allow for controlled hunting.

Authorities have designated the cemetery as a hunting ground to target at least two specific sounders of wild boars. To assist the process, hunters are using corn as bait. The city has issued a strict prohibition on entering the grounds during these hours, citing an “acute danger to life” due to the use of firearms. Signage has been installed to prevent unauthorized access.

Similar issues are being reported in the neighboring municipality of Lahnstein, particularly in Niederlahnstein, where wild boars are increasingly appearing in residential areas. Because residential zones are protected areas where hunting is generally prohibited, officials are relying on large-scale drives in the surrounding areas and advising residents to secure gardens with sturdy fencing.
