Wild boar damage to cemeteries in Rheinland-Pfalz

Wild boars have been causing significant damage to cemeteries across the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz, specifically in cities such as Koblenz, Kaiserslautern, and Trier. Authorities noted that the animals are drawn to these sites due to proximity to forests and the availability of moist soil in freshly watered graves during drought conditions. Because hunting is often prohibited in cemeteries, these locations have become safe havens for the animals.

In response to the destruction, municipalities have begun implementing various deterrent strategies. In Koblenz, the city administration has implemented nighttime closures of the Main Cemetery from 20:00 to 06:00 to facilitate controlled hunting. Officials designated the site as a hunting ground to target specific sounders using corn as bait, warning that unauthorized entry poses an “acute danger to life” due to the use of firearms.

Other regions are adopting different measures, such as installing robust fencing in Trier and Kaiserslautern. In the neighboring municipality of Lahnstein, where boars are appearing in residential areas, officials are relying on large-scale drives in surrounding areas and advising residents to secure their gardens.
