Koblenz gas pipeline hit by excavator triggers large emergency response

An excavator operating on a construction site in the centre of Koblenz damaged a gas pipeline belonging to Energienetze Mittelrhein, causing a gas leak and an immediate risk of explosion. Police established a safety perimeter of roughly 100 metres around the site, redirected traffic and advised residents to remain indoors while the leak was contained.

During the emergency operation the excavator's bucket slipped and struck a second underground utility, leading to a temporary power outage for nearby neighbourhoods. Energienetze Mittelrhein confirmed the damage and announced that repair work is underway. The incident occurred on 2 June 2026; no injuries have been reported. Koblenz, a major tourist destination in Rhineland‑Palatinate, saw its downtown area temporarily disrupted as authorities managed the situation.
