Turkey braces for severe July rainstorms and flooding

A series of Meteorology General Directorate warnings forecast heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across much of Turkey in late July 2026. Alerts ranging from yellow to orange covered 35 provinces, with especially intense rainfall expected in the Marmara, Black Sea, Central Anatolia and Mediterranean regions.

The severe weather triggered flooding in Kastamonu’s coastal districts, prompting evacuations of more than 150 homes and businesses, while Istanbul and Ankara experienced water‑logged streets, closed underpasses and stranded vehicles. Municipal authorities in Istanbul mobilised over 5,000 personnel and 2,000 vehicles to address the flooding, and Kocaeli’s metropolitan municipality prepared 1,200 staff and equipment for rapid water‑drainage.

The rain also caused a sharp temperature drop, giving Eskişehir its coolest July day in 21 years, and prompted agricultural damage assessments in Ardahan Province. Local fire, water and road‑maintenance units were deployed nationwide to mitigate landslides, flash floods and infrastructure disruption.
