Ongoing severe rain, flooding, heat, and fires across TR
Overview
Turkey has faced a prolonged period of severe weather, characterized by recurring heavy rain, thunderstorms, and flash flooding across various provinces. In late May 2026, the Interior Ministry issued orange-level alerts for widespread thunderstorms, specifically targeting provinces like Ankara, Sakarya, and coastal regions such as Rize and Artvin. By early June, flooding and drowning risks became critical in Tokat province. In the Tomarza district, evacuation measures were extended for several villages, and Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi reported that four people were involved in a flood rescue operation, with one body recovered and one person remaining missing. Throughout June and July, the Meteorology General Directorate continued issuing yellow-code warnings for dozens of provinces. In mid-June, intense rain caused significant disruption in Kırşehir and Konya, while Ordu experienced street submersion and a retaining wall collapse. By mid-July, moist air from the Balkans triggered further storms in the Marmara region, including Istanbul. In late July, severe weather warnings covered 61 provinces, including Kahramanmaraş, where intense rain and potential tornadoes were forecast. This period saw significant flooding in Kastamonu and temperature drops in Eskişehir. By mid-August, flash floods continued to impact the country. In Erzurum’s Köprüköy district, torrential rains turned streets into rivers, making roads impassable. In Adana’s Tufanbeyli district, intense rainfall caused water to enter the ground floors of several buildings. On August 14, heavy rainfall in Rize triggered landslides and water flooding, affecting 61 locations across 42 villages in five districts, including Pazar, Çayeli, Ardeşen, and Fındıklı. By late August, the weather pattern shifted toward an intense tropical heatwave driven by air currents from North Africa and the Persian Gulf. On August 24, Kuyucak in Aydın recorded the highest temperature in the country at 44.1 degrees Celsius, followed by Milas and Tire.
