Overview
Turkey has faced a prolonged period of severe weather, characterized by recurring heavy rain, thunderstorms, and flash flooding across various provinces. Following a period of intense tropical heat in late August, the country has continued to experience a series of natural disasters including severe flooding and forest fires.
In late August, a tropical heatwave originating from Africa caused temperatures to rise 3 to 6 degrees Celsius above seasonal norms. By mid-October, severe storms triggered widespread flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage in provinces such as Zonguldak, Sakarya, Bartın, and Istanbul. In Zonguldak, over 150 kilograms of rainfall in 24 hours led to rockfalls and flooded homes. In Sakarya, a dam overflow caused the Darıçayırı neighborhood to face its fourth flood in five months, necessitating the evacuation of a family from a stranded bungalow. Bartın reported 14 floods and significant roof damage. In Istanbul, districts like Beykoz and Sarıyer received a large portion of their annual rainfall in a single day. In Düzce, heavy precipitation transitioned into snow at higher elevations, reaching depths of 20 centimeters.
In response, AFAD reported the deployment of 60,395 personnel, 1,060 volunteers, and 8,927 vehicles for nationwide search, rescue, and damage assessment. Local authorities, such as the Tekirdağ Metropolitan Municipality, have also dispatched specialized teams and pumps to assist affected zones.
