Severe rainstorms and wind warnings hit Turkey

Entities: Istanbul · Yalova · İzmir · Bursa · Turkish State Meteorology Directorate

Overview

Turkey’s Meteorology General Directorate continued to issue yellow‑ and orange‑level alerts for heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across the Marmara, Black Sea, Central Anatolia and Mediterranean regions through late July. The warnings covered 35 provinces, with rainfall totals of up to 28 kg/m² projected for Kocaeli and surrounding areas, sustaining flash‑flood, landslide and road‑collapse risks.

Emergency response remained robust: Istanbul and Ankara deployed more than 5,000 personnel and thousands of vehicles, while Kocaeli’s metropolitan authority activated an emergency plan with over 1,200 staff and drone monitoring. Evacuations affected more than 150 homes and businesses in Kastamonu’s coastal districts, and water‑logged streets and stranded vehicles were reported in Istanbul and Ankara. The storm also produced a sharp temperature drop, giving Eskişehir its coolest July day in 21 years, and prompted agricultural damage assessments in Ardahan Province.

From 30 July to 2 August, the Directorate added severe wind alerts for the Marmara and North Aegean regions. Gusts of 40–60 km/h were forecast for Istanbul, Yalova, Bursa, İzmir and Çanakkale, raising concerns about roof damage, fallen trees, utility poles and transport disruptions. Local officials, including the Istanbul Governor’s Office, urged residents to take precautionary measures and stay alert to evolving hazards.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, deploying fire, water and road‑maintenance units nationwide to mitigate landslides, flash floods and infrastructure impacts.
