Kocaeli's Körfezray Metro Tunnel Work Accelerates

The Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality and Turkey's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure are advancing the Körfezray Metro Project by continuing underground tunnelling with six tunnel‑boring machines (TBMs). Four TBMs operate beneath the Seka State Hospital site and two at the Derince Millet Garden area, digging and installing segment linings along the planned route that will link Seka State Hospital, Seka Park, Kuruçeşme and Derince stations.

The project is designed to make city travel faster, more comfortable and environmentally friendly. Authorities expect the metro line to remove roughly 600,000 vehicles from roads by 2028, rising to nearly one million by 2053, and to cut carbon emissions by about 236,000 kg in 2028, increasing to 388,000 kg by 2053. Commuters could save up to nine minutes per trip compared with car travel and 37 minutes compared with buses, improving daily life quality while reducing traffic congestion and air pollution.
