Škoda Octavia vRS land speed record anniversary

Fifteen years ago, a specially modified Škoda Octavia vRS set a significant land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA. On August 19, 2011, the vehicle achieved an officially confirmed average speed of 365.45 km/h (approximately 227.08 mph).

Driven by journalist Richard Meaden, the project was an impromptu effort by Škoda UK. Originally intended only to surpass the 200 mph mark, the team realized the existing record was attainable after early successful runs. The record, sanctioned by the Southern California Timing Association, made the Octavia the fastest production vehicle in its class with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.

To achieve these speeds, the team extensively modified the standard car. Changes included a new fuel injection system, enhanced cooling with a 10-liter radiator, and longer gear ratios. The vehicle was also lightened, its suspension lowered, and its aerodynamics improved. The record-breaking run consisted of two passes over an eight-kilometer course, with speeds of 362.93 km/h and 367.98 km/h respectively. The modified car, known as the ‘salt spec’, is now preserved in the Škoda Auto Museum in Mladá Boleslav.
