Škoda Octavia vRS land speed record

Overview

In August 2011, a modified Škoda Octavia vRS set a speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA. Recognized by the Southern California Timing Association, the vehicle achieved an official average speed of 365.45 km/h (approximately 227 mph) over two runs.

To mark the tenth anniversary of the vRS performance line, Škoda UK and Revo Technik modified a standard press car. While retaining the original engine block, pistons, and crankshaft to meet Production Supercharged category rules, the team increased output to over 600 horsepower using a larger Garrett turbocharger and upgraded intake, exhaust, and injection systems. Other modifications included a manual gearbox with longer gear ratios, enhanced cooling, weight reduction, aerodynamic wheel covers, and a lowered suspension. To further reduce weight, the front brakes were removed, and a parachute was installed for deceleration.

The record-breaking ‘salt spec’ vehicle is currently preserved in the Škoda Auto Museum in Mladá Boleslav.
